Insight into war reporting

The Frome Stop the War campaign will host three journalists with expertise on media war reporting and interventions at its next meeting on Thursday, February 7.

The Rook Lane Chapel event will host Victoria Brittain, a journalist, writer, author and playwright.

She cut her journalistic teeth in Washington and subsequently reported from war torn Vietnam. She later reported from Asia, Africa and the Middle East writing for the Guardian and various French magazines.

She is a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and has worked as a consultant for the UN with regard to the impact of war on women. She has written several books, including her latest entitled Shadow Lives, The Forgotten Women of the War on Terror.

David Miller is professor of Sociology at the University of Bath and is widely known for his writings on propaganda, spin, lobbying and is a commentator on media issues, writing regularly for popular media outlets.

He is a founder member of Spinwatch a website which promotes greater understanding of the role of PR, propaganda and lobbying and he is also an author.

Dan Glazebrook is a journalist and political analyst specialising in political relations between the West and the third world.He writes for the Guardian, New Statesman, Counterpunch, Al Ahram Weekly and the Morning Star. He is also a frequent contributor to Russia Today.

He has worked as head of history at City of Bath College and is currently writing and teaching A-levels in Oxford.

Mr Glazebrook will be discussing humanitarian interventionism and asks if this is little more than a 21st century form of the old "white man's burden" discourse that justified 19th century colonialism.
